“At the border between East and West” is a phrase often associated with the city of Ulcinj. This place is known for its fusion of differences, its layered historical significance, and its openness to new opportunities. The city’s architecture reflects its historical development as a fortified, strategic, maritime, and socio-political center.

The Fortress project observes Ulcinj through its layers: history, social development, and future needs for a progressive urban environment. Over the centuries, the intertwined walls of the Ulcinj fortress have protected the layers of growth of both the place and its community. The concept of this project is inspired by the relationship between the wall element and its ability to shape and protect a spatial whole and its users.

Fortress metaphorically uses the wall as both a visual and symbolic barrier between zones of different programmatic activities. Varying levels of privacy and security characterize each zone. Together, the walls and zones organize a layered space, ready to write a new chapter in the sports history of this city.
